die pet shop boys, die bei der brit-award-verleihung am 18. februar 2009 mit dem preis für ihren außergewöhnlichen beitrag zur musik ausgezeichnet wurden, haben drei der elf songs gemeinsam mit xenomania geschrieben. die übrigen stücke entstammen der feder von tennant/lowe, bei »all over the world« hat tschaikovsky einige ideen beigesteuert.
als vorbote des neuen albums »yes« wurde am 13. märz 2009 die single »love etc« veröffentlicht. die pet shop boys beschreiben diesen song als »post-lifestyle-hymne«, die mit nichts, was sie jemals zuvor gemacht haben, vergleichbar ist.

los angeles based natan h and malta based artist owen jay return as gauss with their first ep of 2017. entitled resonator it offers more deep music with an electronic soul and is their fifth ep for their cultured label gauss ltd. the title track opens things up with a crunchy and impactful mix of weighty dub drums and spangled techno chords. it s a heavy track that builds in momentum and is sure to mangle minds with its skewed stabs and wiry electronics. shifted is a more fierce techno track with urgency in the kicks and a sense of anger in the coarse little snare explosions. more gurgling synths add weight and this one is a real stomper as a result. cutting ever more loose, odyssey is a mix of idm sound design, soulful synth smears and percolating electro tinged drums that are slick and futuristic. least squares completes this techno picture with spitting hits and claps, underwater chords and acidic sonar pulses that soothe the mind. this is an expansive ep that marks an exciting evolution in gauss s sound.

dub and minimal sounds are interweaved in the second release of the tevol label. on the a-side you can find mystery and a beautiful dub story from artists based in israel, the united states and japan. the b-side brings you incredible energy based on unique dub-techno elements with a punchy kick and groovy bass line.

few would challenge the claim that the 1960s and 70s have been the most fertile two decades in the history of popular music ever - a period which, regardless of genre, laid the foundations for everything that has followed. what is more, this period was so fertile that the speed with which tastes changed left a colossal amount of incredible music to gather dust - perhaps most famously a profusion of funk, soul and jazz. it was a musical legacy that lay mouldering until the rise of sampling in late 80s hip-hop precipitated a mad scramble for lost crates and suddenly, the music that became known as rare groove - for obvious reasons (it was rare and very groovy) - experienced a phoenix-like rebirth. a quarter of a century on and a million funk, soul, jazz-funk and rare groove compilations, re-presses and re-releases later, you d think that cupboard was bare and yet, even now, there are gems to be found. pt is re-releasing the rarest of cuts that often were originally only limited runs or private pressings and new compilation down & wired is just such a collection. always soulful, this features everything from mod groovers and northern stompers, to funky bumps and latin heaters. yet while the quality of all cuts is immediately apparent, only one of the eleven has ever been previously been compiled because when pt do rare, they don t mess around. in fact, if these tracks were steaks - they d still be walking around eating grass.
